The neo-Gothic Evangelic cathedral of J. A. Comenius got a USB drive embedded into its western wall. You can plug the drive to your notebook and upload or download any data.

The semi-illegal act was done by student that is calling himself “Floran Iveš” (which obviously isn’t a real name).

In Brno, internet is even faster than tractors! (scanned from book BRNO, ed. by M. Budík, O. Hrubý and V. Reichmann)

It may take up to two weeks for some providers to install everything necessary and to connect you to the internet, so if you are about to move to a new apartment, contact the company of choice in advance.

(Note: Netbox, UPC and O2 also offer cable TV, but I think this is a topic for a separate article.)

Netbox

Netbox is my favorite broadband provider – I was its client for almost two years and the service were stable, affordable (CZK 425 for 20+ Mb line/month) and damn fast.

Bad thing is that they are avaible only in few parts of Brno.

UPC

UPC is the largest provider in the town and I think that even in the Czech republic. Compared to Netbox, their broadband connection has slightly weaker price/value ratio, but you still get a decent connection for some CZK 400 a month.

Entira

I used Entira when I was living at Cejl st. Good thing about them is that they offer Wi-Fi connection, which means that they are avaible even in the places where you can’t get Netbox or UPC, even though the installation fee may be up to several thousand crowns. The connection was slow and sometimes it did not work for many minutes, but it is still a good choice for out-of-the-way localities.

Mobile internet

Mobile operators offer relatively expensive services in the Czech republic, but if you own a notebook and travel often, there is no better choice. I am using affordable Vodafone mobile internet (CZK 180 for 3G internet on the go/month); check out also O2, T-Mobile and U:fon.

Brno-based studio Amanita Design is working on their first full game, called “Machinarium“. Here goes a trailer:

Amanita Design has published some amazing online games before, including Samorost and Samorost 2, brain-teasing state-of-art arcades directly inspired by the nature around Brno.

Czech technology-related news website Živě.cz reported about 3D model of old Prague in Google Earth. Wow, it looks really great:

I was curiout about Brno. There are just few buildings standing in Google Earth, all located close to the centre, but not in it – it’s creepy, as if Brno was destroyed by an H-bomb exploding somewhere above Veveří st.
