Exhibition Images of the Mind presents how both artists and scientists have been envisioning the human mind for centuries. It is on view at the Moravian Gallery until 3/18 2012.

The exhibition will display a wide scope of exhibits: from medieval medical tractates and illuminated manuscripts via medical illustration from the 19th century to current high-tech biomedicine images and visualizations. They will be accompanied by a broad spectrum of artistic expressions of various origins that depict the working of the mind – such as Renaissance portraits representing the “movement of the mind” or examples of Chinese landscape paintings created as clear metaphors of the human mind, works of art of classic modernism and contemporary art, including installations, new media and videoart. CEITEC buildings in Bohunice, next to the recently finished complex of Masaryk University.

European Commision finally approved the project of CEITEC, a huge science facility to be built in quarters Bohunice and Královo Pole before 2014.

This is probably the best news for Brno this year. The 5+ billion CZK project will not only attract more scientists and research companies but also provide many new jobs for common fellas.

CEITEC is a project aiming to set up a Central European centre of scientific excellence in Brno together with local universities and research institutes (Masaryk University, Brno University of Technology, Mendel University in Brno, Institute of Physics of Materials, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Veterinary Research Institute). A laboratory will be outfitted with first-class equipment and facilities which will foster the perfect conditions for basic and applied research in the field of life sciences and advanced materials and technology. Nicholas Copernicus Observatory and Planetarium is exhibiting the 1959 Nobel prize of Jaroslav Heyrovský just today, from 6 p.m.

Jaroslav Heyrovský (1890 – 1967) was the inventor of the “polarographic method” and a father of electroanalytical chemistry.

Herovský was the only Czech who had ever received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

Technologies, healthcare, environment, robotics and cognitive systems – these are some of the topics that will be discussed at the Czech Inovation Day and Brokerage Event 2009, taking place in Holiday Inn hotel on April 29 and 30.

The event is organized by Masaryk University, Brno University of Technology, Brno Regional Chamber of, FIRST Innovation Park, South Moravian Innovation Centre and Transport Research Centre.

ICT Brokerage 2009 is held under the Czech Presidency of the European Union and is an accompanying event of the conference Research Connection 2009.

There go my nominations for the informal, but very interesting prize of the weblog Brnopolis:

I am sure that the move with the biggest contribution to the city attractiveness for people in creative professions is the ongoing development of the university quarter in Bohunice. In 2008, the place finally became more similar to a town than to a construction site – that is why I believe this is the right time to say: Well done, Masaryk university (and other developers)!

Not only the new quarter gives a required “living space” to people involved in many different science projects; it is a symbol of the “2000s and 2010s Brno” as a town of education and research.

The project also helps to transform a desolated place with an überugly large bulding of hospital into a pretty, swinging quarter. I hope it will also stop the decay of nearby quarters Bohunice and Nový Lískovec.

What about the “long-term benefit award”? The Faculty of social studies celebrated the 10th anniversary last year. For 10 years, it has been preventing talented, creative and high-flying young people from leaving Brno and making other great minds relocate to the town. That is quite a contribution!

Weblog Brnopolis is encouraging its readers (no matter if they prefer Czech or English) to pick a move of the year.

Brnopolis is looking for an original move, event or action that contributed most to the city attractiveness for people in creative professions in 2008. It might happen in culture, gastronomy, business, science, media, public administration, sport or other activities.
