Well, we all know that the Valentine’s Day is an overhyped product of global consumerist culture, but… it is still a nice reason for having some extra quality time with your loved one and for exploring Brno at the same time!

Enjoy Valentine’s Day in Kamenná kolonie shanty town

If you have never been to “Kamenka“, you may explore this wonderful part of the town from February 12 to 14. On the afternoons and evenings, there will be several events taking place in Sixty Stone Space gallery and the famous Duck Bar. You will be able to buy hand-made soaps and delicious local cookies in the gallery.

Have a great dinner

Many restaurants will offer a special Valentine’s Day menu from Friday to Monday – including Rialto, Bruna Antiqua or Momo Sushi. Also, Grand Restaurant Festival is still running!

The weather is nice, so why don’t you just go out for a walk?

Enjoy life at two fish-grilling parties

We’re going to have two grilling party with delicious fishes and good music in Brno during the next week – so move your ass and enjoy the summer, just don’t forget to pack your mints or chewing gums ,)

Filetti di Baccala

There’ll be a feast called Filetti di Baccala in Bakala café at Žerotínovo sq. on Saturday, July 18, since 9 p.m. You can taste a fried cod, new fish toasts and a special coctail, as well as a welcome drink. You’ll forget about the stormy weather thanks to DJ session Aquarium and charming waitresses. (By the way, Bakala Café is not named after a codfish, it’s a homage to musician Břetislav Bakala.)

Ristorante Rialto will have a Cuban coctail party with a grill and live Cuban music a week later, on Friday, July 24, since 7 p.m. The event will be a wild gourmet all-you-can-eat-orgy, so if you don’t mind the CZK 1,200 (€46) entrance fee, be there.

Sushi bar & asparagus festival in Rialto Ristorante

Rialto Ristorante

Rialto ristorante launched a new sushi bar, designed in oriental style and offering sushi from Monday to Friday. You can choose from nigiri sushi, maki sushi and california rolls with prices starting at CZK 45 (€1.68) for a piece or CZK 110 (€4.10) for a set of 6 pieces. Rialto also offers “take-away” sushi – a nice way of awarding yourself if you work till late hours.

Asparagus festival

From April 28 to May 31, a special asparagus menu is offered in Rialto. Among the specialities are:

Gratinated asparagus with Parma ham and Parmesan cheese (CZK 180, €6.70)
Wild garlic creamy soup with prawns and asparagus pieces (CZK 150, €5.60)
Swordfish fillet with sauce hollandaise, boiled asparagus and baked new potatoes on fresh thyme (CZK 590, €22)
Fresh asparagus in wine prepared with sauce hollandaise or wild garlic sauce, new potatoes and Italian smoked ham (CZK 290, €10.80).

Tapas Menu in Ristorante Rialto

You don’t have to travel to Madrid to taste some of the great spanish snacks (or antipasta) called “tapas”. Ristorante Rialto offers a special Tapas menu from March 12th, 6 PM, until March 15th.

The menu has 15 items, inspired by spanish, greek and even japanese cuisine. I consider these to be the most atractive:

Warm goat cheese on a potato waffle with pesto and tomato chutney (CZK 160, € 5.80)
Gambas Ajillo – spicy prawns (CZK 250, € 9)
Tuna sashimi with orange-mustard dip and fresh mint (CZK 280, € 10.10)

3 Clever Valentine’s Day Ideas

It doesn’t matter anymore that you don’t know a lot about Brno or about romance: there go 3 proven tips!

1. Have an unforgettable dinner

There are several really great restaurants in Brno and some of them prepared special “Valentine’s Day Menus” to feed all those hungry, romance-seeking pairs.

Martin Němec, the food and beverage manager of Rialto Ristorante, sent us this yummy menu, worth CZK 890 (€32):

Fresh oyster
Creamy terrine in Ikarimi – smoked salmon jacket on cucumber noodles
Home-made ravioli filled with spinach, parsley, and quail soft-boiled egg white with truffle butter
Veal medallions wrapped in potato chips with artichokes on morel sauce and Jerusalem artichoke or Cacciucco soup with Mediterranean fish and shellfish
Sacher parfait with apricot sauce

I also recommend restaurant Brabander at Joštova st.; they will be serving these delicatessen, worth CZK 759 (€27):

Duck marinated in lemon and honey with peppermint and cranberry mousse
Tiger shrimps in rice Wonton with spicy mango sauce
Mint lime sorbet
Turkey Tournedos with potato pudding and a drop of truffle oil
Marchpane balls with chocolate and almonds

2. Say goodbye to Bill and Tom, the Knuts of Brno

February 14th is the perfect day to say goodbye to Bill and Tom, cute fluffy young polar bears that will leave Brno and find their new home in Gelsenkirchen a day after the Valentine’s day. The entrance fee for the ZOO is very reasonable CZK 80 (€2.80).

3. Learn about the history of sex

Exhibition “100,000 years of sex” located in the Špilberk castle has a “Valentine’s day discount” – pairs will pay CZK 200 (€7.20) for entrance instead of 2 times CZK 150. Hurray: exploring ancient erotic toys won’t destroy your budget!
