Three of the most popular clubs in Brno, i.e. Two Faces, Fléda, and Mersey open after 8 p.m. on the Christmas Eve (December 24). The admission charge is rather symbolic (around CZK 50).

Also, several pubs, like Modrá růže at Moravské náměstí sq. offer beer to anyone who doesn’t want to go to bed early on the Christmas Eve.

It is going to be much more expensive to spend the New Year’s Eve (December 31) downtown – most clubs ask for CZK 100-500 as the entrance fee.

If you are not into parties, you may call for a reservation to your favorite restaurant – each year, more and more venues offer special “New Year’s Eve menu”.

Every year, there are thousands of people celebrating at the central square all night long. The new, penis-shaped clock will be covered in a special protecting sleeve, instantly nicknamed “a condom”.

Both on December 24 and December 31, standard tram and bus lines go only until 6 p.m. You have to use the night bus lines then – but do not worry, all parts of the town are covered and you pay the usual fare.

On January 1 at 6 p.m., there will be a firework show above the Špilberk castle. I hope you will get up before that time.

Prepare for loud groups of devils (known as krampuses in Austria) and angels, led by St. Nicholas(es), on the night of Monday, December 6. One of the most beautiful Czech traditions – masked people giving candies to good kids – takes place on the same day like every year.

In highly Catholic regions, the local priest was informed by the parents about their children’s behaviour and would then personally visit the homes in the traditional Christian garment and threaten to beat them with a rod. In parts of Austria, Krampusse, who local tradition says are Nikolaus’s helpers (in reality, typically children of poor families), roamed the streets during the festival. They wore masks and dragged chains behind them. These Krampusläufe (Krampus runs) still exist.

In the Czech Republic and Slovakia Mikuláš, in Poland Mikołaj and in Ukraine Svyatyi Mykolay is often also accompanied by an angel (anděl/anioł/anhel) who acts as a counterweight to the ominous devil or Knecht Ruprecht (čert/czart). Additionally, in Poland children find the candy and small gifts under the pillow or in their shoes the evening of 5 December. In Ukraine this tradition is celebrated on 19 December.

Sounds like a good reason for a party

If you prefer a shot of vodka to a candy but still want to enjoy the St. Nicholas tradition, then there are several parties for you this week.

On Wednesday, December 1, the 5th “Student party” will take place in Semilasso club (126 Palackého třída st.). People dressed as st. Nicolas, an angel or a devil will get a free entrace!

On Saturday, you may enjoy “crazy St. Nicholas party” with a travesti show in gay club Red Cat (25 Masarykova st.) and on the same day, there is a party at Tabarín (3 Divadelní st.).

One of the largest dance parties of the year will take place in the P pavilion at the exhibition center on Friday, November 19.

11 DJs and 2 live bands will perform at the 33rd Apokalypsa – The Bells edition.

Tickets cost CZK 699. The party will start at 5 p.m. and will last for 15 hours, until 8 a.m.

11/15, 10.40 a.m.: Thank you folks, the competition is over. The right answers were: 1/ ani-nazi students’ protests in 1939, 2/ the Velvet revolution in 1989.

The lineup will include DJ Maztah (the most booked party DJ in the Czech republic), Dew Town Dogz, Sukowach, DJ Dummy and DJ High Selecta. Party starts at 8:30 p.m. at it won’t be over until 5 a.m. next morning.

As the event commemorates the role of students in the 1989 Velvet revolution, 10 percent of the money made on tickets will be send to Amnesty International.

Since 2005, Brno has been hosting “New New” festival, presenting “unusual music and film”, as well as other arts.

This year, New New! launches on November 9 and ends on November 20. Among other events, you may enjoy these parties:

• Concert of Fuckhead (A), In Skatebored We Noize (IT) and RBNX (SK) in the House of Arts on November 12.
• Workshops of drummer Seijiro Murayama (JP) in the House of Arts on November 17 (2 p.m.) and November 18 (6 p.m.).
• Concert of Jon Hopkins (UK), S.C.U.M. (UK), FETT (GER), BIOS (SK) and B4 (CZ) at Fléda on November 19.

“The largest student party in Brno” starts in Fléda club (24 Štefánikova st.) on Wednesday, October 27, at 8 p.m.

There’ll be two concerts (Overhype, Vehykl), five DJs (Ekop, DJane Jeaniss, Dummy, 2T, Majky) and hundreds of students looking for fun and new friends.

The genres will vary from rock to nu-metal, hip hop and house.

Tickets are avaible for CZK 100 and beer will cost only CZK 20 (€0.80).

Bands Prago Union, Lesní zvěř, Lavagance (SK), Ventolin and Youcoco (SK) will perform live at the opening party. Resident DJs “Greatest Hits Collective” will most likely play until next morning.

Zbrojovka is located in neighborhood Zábrdovice. During the second half of the 20th century it manufactured weapons – that is why guns are called “Brno” in Iraq even now. The area is now half-abandoned and the buildings will be torn down in the next decade, to make space for a new residential quarter.

Bristol-based electronic group Fuck Buttons will be the main guest of Itch My Hahaha party in Fléda club on Tuesday, May 4.

Both Fuck Buttons’ albums were praised by critics – and were marked as the “Best new music” at renowed music website Pitchfork.

Fuck Buttons will be supported by Czech post-punk band Kazety and Fléda’s resident DJs Greatest Hits Collective. Tickets cost CZK 250 and the party starts at 8 p.m.

The Exhibition centre will host the dance-music event of the year, Citadela party, on Friday night.

The biggest star of the night is a German DJ Paul van Dyk, who is coming to Brno for the first time. He will be supported by Michael Burian, Polish DJ Toxic Noiz and Czech DJs Orbit, Pico, Jerry and Loutka.

Citadela will take the place in the biggest exhibition hall in the central Europe, known as “P”. Visitors are supposed to use entrances #7 and #9 – check out this simple map.

The party is supposed to attract 10,000+ people. Tickets cost CZK 799 or €30.

English electronic music group Autechre, founded in 1987, will perform at Itch My Hahaha party at Fléda club on Wednesday, March 31.

The concert is going to be one of the most important musical events of 2010 in Brno. Autechre has pioneered several genres, including IDM (inteligent dance music), techno, electro and hip-hop and gained popularity both among fands and critics.

During the night, Rob Hall, Russel Haswell and Didjit will peform as well.

The party launches on 8 p.m. Tickets cost CZK 490 (€19) or CZK 390 (in pre-sale).
