Czech republic to be paralysed (sort of) by the largest strike in recent years

by Michal Kašpárek on December 6, 2010

Brno will be affected just like the rest of the country.

Brno will be affected just like the rest of the country.

Teachers, doctors and most of the state employees will go on strike on Wednesday, December 8.

Several labor unions disagree with two new laws, prepared by the right-wing government:

  • The state is cutting down the volume of money for salaries in public sector by 10 per cent next year.
  • The current “wage tables” based on years worked will be abandoned. Managers of state-owned bureaus and companies will have larger freedom in increasing or decreasing the wages of their employees.

Also, many young doctors are frustrated with the contracts they are being offered by Czech hospitals and threat to leave the country for working in Austria and Germany (which many of them have already done).

It is quite hard to forecast what the strike means for “ordinary people”. It looks like:

  • The doctors will take care of anyone seriously sick, but do not expect to have your birth-marks removed on Wednesday.
  • Most bureaus, like tax offices, will be closed.
  • Public transport should run as usual.

The unions claim that the strike is rather symbolic, as it is clear that the government will have no problems with approving the new legislation.

My solidarity to czech workers on strike!

You are facing now what we (western european) already soffered in the last years.

Is there any forecast to reduce politicians salary and benefits instead of the ones of (important )workers such as doctors and teachers?????

It is ridiculous how czech Doctors are treated. Despite the exhausting conditions they are working under they do a great job and thats somethintg that has to be recoginzed to them. If these people that get paid like shit would just go on a radical strike the czech patients would be in huge trouble..! Support to the czech doctors!

What is unfair is the economic system established by stupid people voting for right-wing parties.

how can an employee of a private company earn more than a teacher or a nurse?
how can a manager of a private company earn more than a doctor?

Pedro> From a pure statistical point of view, it is more than likely that there are at least some right-wing voters that are smarter than you are. Different opinions are not a reason for being offensive.

Michal, it is a fact that there are right wing voters smarter than me, like you might be.
I did not say that all of them are stupids.
However would be nice if you could, please, explain me your point of view in that matter.

Thanks
