Town council decided to remove the communist symbol of hammer and sickle from Red Army memorial in district Královo pole.
The five-pointed star is recognized as a politically correct symbol of Red Army but the hammer and sickle are equal to Nazi swastika for many people.
The memorial has been a subject of controversy in recent years. The hammer and sickle were illegaly removed by a local politician René Pelán, which upset the Soviet Russian embassy. Then the signs returned back, but not for long.
The council also wants to accurately locate the mass grave under the memorial and to engrave some 300 names of dead soldiers who died in the battle of Brno in 1945 on the new, hammer and sickle-free memorial.
