A shanty-town-turned-into-an-artist-community, Kamenná kolonie, is still mourning for Stefan Schoedel, German guy working in Brno, who died from a middle ear infection two weeks ago.

Stefan’s ears and head hurted so much he was not able to walk. However, an ambulance operator refused to send a full-value ambulance car to help him. According to Stefan’s friends, the doctor who finally arrived to Kamenná kolonie was arrogant and did not offer the sick man adequate service, because Stefan had dreadlocks and looked like a junkie.

The expat, who had been working at a post office and according to his friends “paying taxes”, died two days after — 30 minutes after his neighbors called another ambulance, which arrived 90 minutes later!

The community of “Kamenka” isn’t careless about the controversial death of a young man. There’s an improvised memorial next to “Duck pub”, and what’s more, Stefan’s neighbors made a public prosecutor to file a criminal complaint. The incident is now being investigated by police. Stefan’s Facebook page is still active, which makes the whole thing somehow even more sad.

About Kamenná kolonie

A narrow street of Kamenná kolonie

Kamenná kolonie (also known as Kamenná čtvrť or Kamenka) was built by the poorest workers in the 1930s. Since the 1960s, it has been a sacred place of the bohemians and alternative artists of Brno. There are several dozens of tiny houses, often decorated by original ornaments. The quarter is often compared to a swallow’s nest.
