EU to pay CZK 200M for a cleaner Brno dam

by Michal Kašpárek on March 18, 2009

The South Moravian Region will try to clean the Brno dam from dangerous anabaena bacterias. The project is supposed to have been finished by December 2011. EU will give the region CZK 200M (€7.5M).

The water in the dam will be oxidized by 20 special towers. The whole area will be covered by lime poured from airplanes. Finally, there will be hunting fishes put in the water to kill whatever helps the bacterias to survive.

Due to the cleaning project, no swimming will be allowed in the dam and ships will stay in haven this year.

The Brno dam is located in the north-west part of the town and is known as a very popular recreational area for swimmers, bikers and hikers.
